Abstract
  • This phenomenological research involved in-depth field interviews with four male inmates. The research unfolded their experiences as a means of shedding light on the dark world of the lost soul. The author explores the lived experience of the lost soul, examining the process of humanity's struggle from existence to essence, and the impediments to that process. The analysis was grounded in Tillich and Ricoeur and the psychological theories of Rizzuto, Meissner and Freud. Ministry with persons living in the dark world of the lost soul involves trying to help them focus within themselves, where they may begin to find the essence of their identity.
