- Abstract
- This project studies the importance of the Old Testament pericopes in themselves and their relationship to the gospel reading of the Roman Catholic Sunday lectionary. Commentaries for each Sunday's set of readings for the three-year cycle were written. Three periods of in-ministry testing of a congregation demonstrated that the majority of congregational respondents benefitted from emphasis on the Old Testament message, and that lay and peer advisory group respondents grew in their appreciation of that message and its integration in their faith-life. Critical reflections on the use of the Old Testament and juxtaposition of texts pointed up a glaring inadequacy, that scrupulous adherence to the fundamental principle guiding the formation of the lectionary, that of proclaiming the paschal mystery, frequently tended to reduce the Hebrew revelation to a matter of little consequence apart from the fact of Christ.
