  • Men face many problems at the end of the 20th century. This study looks at the effects upon men of the absence of fathers and mentoring men, men's dependency upon women to meet emotional needs and men's difficulties in separating developmentally from mothers. The work of Robert Bly, the masculine archetypes of Robert Moore and the spirituality/sexuality of James Nelson are addressed. Two stories enjoying currency for their illustrating landmarks to mature masculinity are included. Case studies are from the author's pastoral psychotherapeutic practice. The conclusion is that men can benefit therapeutically from learning from their bodies, embracing the depths within themselves and being with one another in men's groups.
