Abstract
  • Hospices are an appropriate, but underused, setting for employment for pastoral counselors. Legislation applying to Medicare-certified hospices required them to employ a 'pastoral or other counselor.' This stipulation is often overlooked. 1987 research found that generally the social worker fulfills the counseling function. A survey of Massachusetts Medicare-certified hospices conducted for this project found similarly. The problem was investigated by the survey, literature review, interview with AAPC's Executive Director, and critique by peer pastoral counselors. The project also examines how hospice pastoral counseling differs from traditional pastoral counseling and discusses opportunities in hospice settings for pastoral counseling clinical practice and research.
