Abstract
  • Marriage is a process of joining and forgiveness. The unique personality of a marital relationship develops in progressive stages. Each stage includes developmental tasks appropriate to the age of the marriage at years three, seven, eleven, seventeen, twenty-two and twenty-seven. As the marital relationship progresses through the stages, three gestalt models of intimacy, the traditional, arrangement and mutual forms of marriage emerge. The development of a marriage includes the experience of loss and the necessity to forgive. Joining is the process of individuation and couplehood generated by forgiveness.
