Abstrakt

A total of 478 persons representing 232 Army families from four Army installations in the United States and 38 active duty Army chaplains from the same installations were surveyed to determine whether Army chaplains are more accurate in their perceptions of the family environments of officer families than of enlisted families. The instrument used in this research was the Family Environment Scale (FES) which measures family environment in three major dimensions: Relationship, Personal Growth, and System Maintenance. Dimensions are divided into the following ten subscales: Cohesion; Expressiveness; Conflict; Independence; Achievement Orientation; Intellectual-Cultural Orientation; Active Recreational Orientation; Moral-Religious Emphasis; Organization; and Control. Through analysis of variance, it was determined that there were significant differences between officer and enlisted families in two areas, which were Intellectual-Cultural Orientation and Control, and that there were differences approaching statistical significance in the areas of Conflict and Active Recreational Orientation.
