- Abstract
- Of the more than 200 heads of staff who were chosen by congregations of the United Presbyterian Church from 1978 through 1982, not one was a woman. The thesis of this dissertation is that parishioners' image of the ideal is a major factor. Adams probes the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of church decision making by examining the biblical and doctrinal approach of the UPC, interviewing pastor nominating committees which selected ministers during the period, and questioning all the heads of staff themselves to compile a profile of the persons who were chosen. The result reveals an image which is in the process of change--from fatherly, independent and directive to friendly, interdependent and collegial.
