- Abstract
- This project focuses on what it takes to preach transformationally in today's postmodern context. Chapter one begins by examining the challenges that postmodern culture poses to preaching. Chapter two defines postmodernism in three distinct but separate ways. Chapter three uncovers the mood of postmodern culture and how postmodernism is, in many ways, an existential reaction to the downsides of modernity. Chapter four focuses on discovering how America hears the gospel. understanding this is essential because it provides preachers with ample feedback on how listeners perceive the gospel. Chapter five uses the metaphor of Greek mythology's Trojan Horse to anchor the concept that every culture possesses elements which function as barriers to the gospel. Chapter six identifies elements within the culture which are user-friendly to the gospel. Chapter seven looks at oratorical and cultural factors which make messages stick to listener consciousness. Chapters eight and nine address the personal traits preachers must have to make a difference in a postmodern setting. Since postmodernity signals the age of the communicator as opposed to the age of the preacher, the research objective was to uncover key elements required of communicators who want to effectively reach postmodern listeners.
