- The motivation for this project grows out of the need for a leadership development tool for new and existing leaders to serve in a local church. This tool will address numerous areas of leadership character and competencies; however, of particular concern is the training of leaders to think, learn, and function systematically, acknowledging the complexity of the church as a living organization as it functions in turbulent times. All too often leaders merely emulate the leadership styles and techniques of the marketplace or corporate culture. This project will make a careful study of a biblical theology of the church and of leadership and compare it with the growing data on systems theory and organizational learning theory. This project will explore the use of systems theory as a means of understanding organizational design with the view to aiding leaders in their leadership function. A distinct analysis will be made of Peter Senge's model of systems thinking. Senge's approach will then be used as a grid from which to build a leadership development model.
