  • This project examines the Seventh-Day Adventist Church's continuing struggle to encourage members not to wear jewelry and adornment. The study and seminar are limited to critical biblical texts commonly used to support this position, and the historical roots of this notion. The project discusses definition of terms, church standards, traditions, gender concerns, and Christian principles, and concludes that the SDA church has no biblical basis for its teaching on this issue. Nineteenth-century cultural norms and inherited church traditions have influenced the church's position. Such 'lifestyle' issues should be decided on the basis of principled Christian living.
