- Abstract
- This research project was designed to: 1) identify and quantify the opinions of SBC (Southern Baptist Convention) Air Force chaplains and SBC parish pastors in Central Alabama on certain questions of faith and practice; 2) identify the areas (denominational affairs, doctrine, war and peace, education, government, and the military) on which the chaplains and Central Alabama parish pastors agree and disagree; and 3) note the percentage points of agreement/disagreement. The first hypothesis, that there would be significant disagreement (defined as 15 percentage points) between the chaplains and civilian clergy on the issues surveyed, was proven false. The data did support the second hypothesis, which stated that chaplains would be more informed than the civilian clergy on questions involving the chaplain-denominational relationship. This study poses a number of questions that additional research could address.
