Abstract
  • Lutheran hymnody is a useful resource for daily devotions. God has always used poetry set to music to teach and proclaim His Word to His people. Throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, we see evidence of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs that contain the Word of God to help people read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the truth of our Lord’s salvific plan. The first Christians continued to incorporate hymns and songs in their worship and daily life. Martin Luther and the reformers of the sixteenth century used hymnody as a vehicle to proclaim Christ and catechize the people to see that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ Jesus alone. Using a variety of methods set forth herein, this project set out to help people see true nature of Lutheran hymnody and how it can be used as a resource for daily Oratio, Meditatio, and Tentatio. These methods did indeed foster a change in people’s attitudes toward Lutheran hymnody and helped them see that the hymns – as an extension of God’s Word – can be an important part of their daily life in Christ.
