Abstract
  • The First Baptist Church of Rochester was begun in 1818 when people of the Village of Rochester developed political, religious, educational and business organizations under the rubric of the new form of freedom that was being established in America. The young congregation developed as a 'covenant community' in the midst of many conflicting forces. The congregation is analyzed through a review of the tenure and style of two pastors critical to the nature of the developing congregation. The concluding pages focus on the 'Golden Years' of the First Baptist Church in which the church, the university and the divinity school shared in a common effort to help shape the social institutions and customs of Rochester.
