- This paper deals with the controversial Homogeneous Unit Principle (HUP) and zeroes in on some multi-ethnic congregations of the Lutheran Church in America to examine the validity of the HUP for urban churches. The study includes a review of the sociological factors that are at work in the communities where multi-ethnic congregations are often found. Factors such as economics, housing, government, and people movement are discussed. The thesis is predicated upon the truth that one cannot understand the multi-ethnic congregation until one has an insight as to its environment.
