Abstract
  • This project proposes that in large churches--such as Valley Evangelical Free Church (Vacaville, Calif), which has grown to 1,300 in attendance since 1979--the tradition of the pastor as hands-on caregiver must be exchanged for the practice of the people of the congregation as hands-on caregivers. The pastoral staff must empower lay ministry and lay leadership, and then empower lay people as primary caregivers. The project offers a framework in which Valley Church becomes a purpose-driven congregation and adopts the meta-church concept of leadership development with small groups as the laboratory for building leaders and facilitating caregiving.
