  • The spiritual practice of silence has deep roots within Christian history, but has been a neglected practice in the mainline Protestant Church. This project focuses on one particular United Methodist congregation and explores the capacity of silence to be spiritually transformative. The congregation was invited to participate in various modes of spiritual silence, including worship silence and centering prayer. The response of the congregation was assessed using focus groups. The research reveals a significant growth in appreciation for the practice of silence and commitment to this new way of being present to God.
