Abstract
  • People in our society are autonomous consumers with the power of individual choice. Therefore, it is critical in faith development to create congregational environments that encourage and facilitate choice-making for faith. One necessary response is to enhance the kinds and frequency of connecting experiences in congregations to provide general encouragement. The second response is to provide specific reflective learning experiences to help individuals clarify new goals for faith development as well as foster strong personal agency beliefs that these goals are achievable. The study concludes that while motivational support of individuals produces more visible results, both approaches are needed for a balanced environment.
