- The purpose of this research paper is to evaluate the role of the church and its mission as it pertains to families of children with disabilities, specifically as the families have been initially notified of the disability. The term disability relates to individuals who are unable to function to their fullest capacity due to various physical, emotional, social, or intellectual problems. This study explores and documents the experiences of families with children in the New Jersey metropolitan area, their involvement with clery and religious congregations, and, more specifically, the experience of parents with a child newly identified with a disability and the role in which clergy and congregations play in that process. The elements of this report include a discussion of current literature and resources on the subject; a theological review of the history of disabilities within the Christian faith and the socioeconomic environment; a description of the research survey tool utilized to gather specific evidence related to the topic; a discussioon of the results gained through the application of this research tool; and an analysis of implications that exist within the current framework of the Christian church. The results challenge clergy not only to provide prayer and presence when families are notified of their children's disability, but clery is also seen as a model whereby congregations will respond positively to the needs of families and their children with disabilities.
