Abstract

The African American houses of worship in this country have a history of being the leading institutions when it comes to advocacy, leadership and education around the social, theological, spiritual, and physiological well-being of the church and community... the author wanted to find out how and why HIV/AIDS is ravaging African Americans before our very eyes. By utilizing research and statistics, the writer sought to determine what the African American houses of worship are doing or not doing and what is needed going forward to help eradicate HIV/AIDS. What the writer discovered as a result of research, interviews, and workshops was that some of the clergy in the city and across the state of New Jersey were willing to start an HIV/AIDS ministry in their churches. The writer also documented the fact that there were those among the clergy willing to have someone come to their church once a quarter to speak on HIV/AIDS. Others were willing to put HIV/AIDS facts in their Sunday morning bulletins... Other pastors committed to providing pastoral care and counseling to those who were infected and affected. Some were willing to preach sermons on HIV/AIDS, place HIV/AIDS material in their houses of worship, and to have condom demonstration sessions set up for both males and females as part of the New Jersey Human Development Corporation's objective of education and prevention.
