Abstract
  • This project explores the meaning of 'dark night of the soul'; how the experience affects one's relationship with God; and what enables one to move from darkness to light again. The author carried out his research using a narrative study methodology, also making use of ethnographic practices on both clergy and laity. The research concluded that a dark night of the soul starts with a perceived separation from God and leads to a reconnection with God. Healthy prayer life, humor, and finding holy advocates can move persons from darkness to light.
