- Throughout the centuries the Christian pastor has been involved with parishioners in times of crisis and distress. Caplan and other researchers emphasize that a crisis is characteristically self-limiting and lasts from four to six weeks. The paper illustrates that a goal-oriented sense of commitment develops in sharp contrast to normal modes of treatment. Crisis management/intervention is not counseling; its goal is the resolution of the crisis and a return to normalcy. The paper deals with the nature of crisis, the dynamics of grief, and death as a grief crisis. The appendices are: 1) two verbatims dealing with a dying patient and a grief sufferer; 2) four surveys; 3) a detailed instruction format for persons who are called upon to manage/intervene in crisis situations; 4) practical aspects of crisis intervention/management; and 5) general considerations on death and dying. A selected bibliography completes the paper.
