  • This project/dissertation treats narcissistic male partners of survivors of child sexual abuse. When the survivor fails to attend to his sexual needs and desires, he experiences this as wounding and defends against the fragmentation of his masculine self by activating his 'masculine defense,' a masculinized narcissistic defensive structure. Empathic attunement is provided and the wounds experienced and defenses activated in relation to the survivor are interpreted in the context of the partners' own history of trauma. Questionnaires completed by partners of the beginning and end of treatment show 70 responses suggesting desirable change, and 15 responses suggesting undesirable change.
