Abstract
  • Failure to retain new members is partially due to cultural gaps between pastors and Appalachian members. If a cultural gap is part of the problem, measures can be taken to help pastors develop greater cultural sensitivity. Surveys investigated differences between perceptions of pastors and members in an Appalachian conference of Seventh-Day Adventists. Percentages, t-tests for independent means, and correlation coefficients examined the relationship between perceptions regarding Appalachian culture of church members and pastors at the .05 significance level. All, but one, of the cultural clusters indicates cultural gaps. Pastors need more cultural understanding.
