Abstract
  • This project surveys 200 home-school families in Nebraska and pastors of congregations of the Presbyterian Church in America attended by home-school families in order to identify and understand sources of conflict between traditional churches and home-school families. Conflict between parents who educate children at home and those who do not often stems from pride and legalism in both parties. Churches that emphasize Christ-centered liberty in education choices and teach covenantal responsibilities of parents toward children experience fewer conflicts. The project proposes that congregations should emphasize covenant education, replacing 'stage in life' categories with 'family unit' categories to restore the mentoring process that characterizes an extended family.
