Abstract
  • Strategic planning, particularly the model developed by Kennon Callahan in Twelve Keys to an Effective Church, moves a congregation and its leaders from a primarily reactive to a proactive style of ministry. Adding a visioning component to the basic Callahan method creates a visionary style of ministry, whereby a church makes strategic decisions about its ministry based upon its strengths and its vision for what it wants to become in five or ten years. The author reflects upon his experience with the Callahan retreats, filters the process through his own Lutheran theological perspective, and proposes a process for a church to create and accept its vision.
