Abstract
  • This doctoral project arose out of the author's curiosity and concern about the local congregation's ability to relate practice of Holy Communion to the mission of the church as it is defined in The book of discipline of the United Methodist Church. Issues addressed in the project include: 1) whether members of the local congregation have a clear understanding of the relationship between the sacrament of Holy Communion and the mission of the church, 2) whether a more complete knowledge and understanding of Holy Communion has an impact upon their perception of the church's mission, and 3) whether the way in which Holy Communion is practiced influences the way in which they attempt to fulfill the mission of the church. Conclusions were drawn from questionnaires and discussions among participants.
