Abstract
  • This project investigates psychological dynamics and patterns and theological issues that influence efforts by law enforcement officers to find relief from intrapsychic and/or interpersonal pain and anxiety. Qualitative research conducted with eight officers reveals three common life experiences--emotionally rejecting parents, low self-esteem, and restricted affect--that issue in three common coping responses: attachment to television heroes, marriage, and careers in law enforcement. The project finds that these officers also share common theological experiences: distance from God, undeveloped faith, and an absence of God's unconditional love.
