- Abstract
- This project proposes to explore the marks of maturity of Christian experience by investigating the way that images of God are formed, beginning in childhood, and then by searching for vocabulary to construct adequate models, looking first at biblical evidence, then at confessional literature, and finally at a diverse theological sampling. The project analyzes each text with particular attention to its point of entry into the discussion: does the text use Scripture to interpret experience or experience to interpret Scripture? J B Phillips's Your God Is Too Small offers guidelines for development of adequate models and a critical understanding of inadequate models. In a congregational setting the entire congregation--through its worship, its teaching, and its spiritual formation--naturally becomes involved in this process.
