Abstract
  • This thesis asks will a congregation be empowered for outreach by preaching themes of evangelism coupled with an immediate opportunity to respond. The author preached such sermons, offered the experience of affirming one's baptism as part of the sermon, and recorded the congregation's involvement in inviting others to worship. He suggests that the addition of responding physically to the sermon helped encourage outreach through the congregation. The implications of this work are that this opportunity may allow congregations to reach out to the unchurched with new passion. It also may call for re-examining the early Church practice of 'mystagogy'.
