- This study sought to identify a constructive pattern of clergy traits as noted by productive pastors to be important in the creation of a positive pastoral presence in their parishes. A survey questionnaire addressing the issue of pastoral presence was administered personally to 101 randomly chosen ministers of the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference. Twenty-two of this group were given further opportunity of an oral response in an open interview. Positive and negative trait patterns were identified by these pastors. The conclusion of this writer is that these trait patterns may be more 'ideal or preferred' rather than realistic.
