Abstract
  • Church and community partnerships create long-term relationships and safe environments for at-risk children and youth. Many children and youth affected by trauma (violence, homelessness, abuse, neglect, and/or natural disaster) do not have an opportunity for personal expression in a safe and/or spiritual environment. The participant-observation method of research was used to create a model connecting the creative arts, the church and community groups that work with at-risk children and youth by making collaborative story quilts. Both student and leader evaluations affirm that quilt-making encourages a conversation that allows art to speak individually and cooperatively.
