  • Five members of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) who self-identified as lesbian described their experiences of homophobia within the Association and among colleagues and its perceived impact on the development of personal and professional authenticity. Through semi-structured interviews, respondents reported less overt homophobia in AAPC than heterosexism. Data obtained suggests the presence of the negative effects of heterosexism on collegial relationships, pastoral counselor training, and the membership process. Overt homophobia was experienced within local agencies affiliated with AAPC and in the institutional church. The impact of homophobia on the development of personal and professional authenticity was identified in terms of professional risks to ordination status and emotional safety.
