Abstract
  • This project raises critical issues for marriage preparation among Chinese couples in the church. The study discusses the traditional Chinese family-orientation and its continued influence in the values, attitudes and behavior of the English-educated, urban middle-class Singapore Chinese. The introduction of Western cultural norms through the process of modernization was readily accepted as a basis for marriage and family life. However, the continued influence of the traditional family-orientation was to be a significant cause of dysfunctional marriages among these couples. Using pre-marital work in America as a model, this project offers suggestions on important issues which need to be dealt with in work among Chinese couples in Singapore.
