Abstract
  • Although church and synagogues are the oldest groups providing visitation and other services to the homebound elderly, few studies have reported on their role in service provision. To better understand the interaction between churches, synagogues and the aging network, data were gathered from clergy and elderly in one community. Of 48 churches, 34 (71 percent) clergy responded to face-to-face interviews. 16 Of 18 social service agencies also agreed to be interviewed. Of the many kinds of programs provided to the elderly by churches, visitation is the most common: all 34 visited congregants in hospitals and all but 2 of 34, when homebound. Among social service agencies 6 of 16 provide direct visitation, meals or other services to the homebound. While concern for the homebound in this community is clear, even though a local coordinating counseling exists to coordinate services, we found no coordination of services between the churches and the agencies. Among a purposive sample of 71 elderly 35 (48 turn to clergy first at a time of need, with 19 (26 percent) turning to physicians and 13 (18 turning to social workers.
