- This project/dissertation examines the question, 'Why are middle-aged men exiting the mainline Christian church, addressing mid-life issues outside the church which has historically asserted patriarchal dominance and strength?' A qualitative research methodology was employed with use of a standardized open-ended questionnaire. Responses of the men revealing their life issues and religious/spiritual attitudes were placed in dialogue with theorists of men's studies and relevant theological themes. Explanations were given as to why men are exiting the churches, including the church's failure to connect with male mid-life issues. The dissertation concludes with significant implications for congregational ministry and leadership.
