Abstract
  • There is a need for a clearer understanding of the nature and function of laymen in the local Lutheran congregation. This need is specifically manifested in regards to the nature and function of lay elders. Through historical and biblical research the author developed a basis for designing educational and guidance resources to be used in aiding lay elders to serve effectively in their congregation. The result is a twelve-month study guide (leader's and learner's) for education in the nature and duties of lay elders and a calling guide to aid lay elders in making calls in specific situations which may relate to the congregational office. These guides were used and revised by the pastor and lay elders of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in West Bend, Wisconsin.
