  • This thesis presents the place of prayer in the Reformed tradition and considers ways to revitalize that expression of faith. Cultural problems have effected a weakened prayer-life for many Reformed Christians. Sociological conditions have led some to a loss of faith and lack of trust. For others, role changes in the family have led to a breakdown in familial religious responsibility. Prayer in the Reformed tradition is then looked at from biblical, historical and theological perspectives. Biblically, prayer is communion with God. Prayer is traced historically from early Jewish worship to the Puritans. Theologically, the paper looks at the transcendent and immanent attributes of God, the effect of sin, justification and sanctification on relationships, and how the church community influences our approach to God through prayer. To revitalize prayer-life, various methods of listening, meditating, keeping a journal, and healing are proposed and explained. The strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed tradition are defined. Recommendations of ways to move toward communion with God conclude the summary.
