Abstract
  • The problem this project addressed was single Hmong mothers raising sons in an American urban culture. In response to this problem the researcher first investigated Scripture's mandate to the church regarding its treatment of single mothers and their sons, as well as the related issues of poverty, loneliness, and low status. The researcher then examined literature about the causes, challenges and possible resources of single mothering. These steps informed the subsequent qualitative research project that gathered data through personal interviews, field notes, surveys, and on-site group discussions with single Hmong mothers, lay leaders, community leaders, pastors, entrepreneurs, and educators. From this data a grounded theory on the subject of single Hmong mothers emerged. Based on this, the researcher made a series of recommendations for supporting and encouraging the single parenting among Hmong women at Immanuel Hmong Lutheran Church in Saint Paul, Minnesota and among the Hmong community within the Twin Cities.
