Abstract
  • Following an extensive review of literature concerning developmental psychology (particularly works by Robert Kegan, James Fowler and Elizabeth Leibert), the paper proposes that congregational 'crises' provide opportunity for transformational development of members and the congregational system itself. Espousing a 'Theology of Helpful Trauma,' the author asserts that crises are developmentally significant opportunities for maturation and encourages clergy and other leaders to facilitate development in crisis rather than work to control it. Four 'touchstones' are provided which empower leaders within such situation to encourage development. Sample worship services for a congregation undergoing a facilities transition are included which apply these touchstones in a practical way.
