Abstract
  • The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of mentally handicapped children and their families in relationship to God and to local churches. The research consisted of a qualitative study in which five families which include a mentally handicapped child were interviewed separately to explore their experiences with God and with local churches. I reached several conclusions for the local church: acknowledge the mentally handicapped as gift; resist dehumanization of the mentally handicapped; listen and learn from personal stories; be proactive in responding to mentally handicapped children and families; befriend the mentally handicapped while never patronizing them; confront the difficulties of practical issues and tough theological questions raised by mentally handicapped children and their families.
