Abstrakt

Insights from new homiletics can help people to hear and embody the grace of God. Preaching that uses narratives and imagery, and is delivered orally, enables the Gospel to be heard and appropriated. The research includes interviews with elderly churchgoers to find out about their life experiences, and a portrait of ageing compiled from literature. Sermons for a congregation of elderly are compared to sermons on the same text for a mixed age congregation. Signs of God's transforming grace at work are noted. Preaching that is oral and embodied, using stories and images, is really effective. It is particularly appropriate for elderly people including those who suffer from dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease, enabling God's love to break through the 'dark clouds.'
