Abstract
  • A syllabus tutorial in academic literacy and integrity was implemented and its affects assessed through quizzes and evaluation of student papers. Citation knowledge improved but plagiarism persisted. In-depth analysis of student papers revealed taxonomies of poor English, poor academic writing, plagiarism indicators, and characteristics of plagiarism and fabrication. The researcher believes plagiarism results from knowledge, ability, or motivational deficiencies. He concluded plagiarism was grades-driven, plagiarism must be addressed through twin pedagogical and moral lenses, all instructors should promote academic literacy and integrity, and more attention should be paid to the role of the bibliography when assessing for plagiarism.
