Abstract
  • This project is designed to meet the preaching renewal needs of pastors who are serving longer tenures. The author compares his own experience as a seventh-year pastor in a mid-sized United Methodist congregation with that of twelve pastors known for effective preaching in long-term settings and also reviews written materials on the person and spiritual renewal of clergy. The project discusses (1) the main challenges of the longer pastorate, (2) the pastor's desert experience, (3) preaching through one's changing role (4) preaching and self-awareness, (5) preaching and spiritual growth, and (6) improving communication in preaching.
