Abstract
  • New England has a rich history of revival. God's Spirit has visited here, and churches and communities have been changed. Could such a revival and visitation occur again today? This paper explores the history of the church in Maine and examines those historical factors that have prevented the church from ministering effectively today. It also examines a unique moment in the church's history, a statewide evangelistic crusade by evangelist Luis Palau in 1999 and the immediate and long-term impact of the crusade on the churches and communities of Maine. Finally, some conclusions are drawn regarding what the crusade taught the church about evangelism and renewal in New England today. The need for repentance, prayer, care for the poor and cooperative evangelism will be highlighted as the keys for effective evangelism that will bring about transformation of our New England communities in the years ahead.
