Abstract
  • The context of this project was six United Methodist churches in the Youngstown, Ohio area. The pastoral concerns addressed through preaching emerged out of the economic crisis occasioned by a rapid decline in the heavy manufacturing industry of the Great Lakes region. Pastoral care and preaching are brought together when the preacher who proclaims 'God is for us,' offers a vision that leads to growth in grace. Such preaching becomes a form of pastoral care for the people of God. The candidate and twelve project associates worked together to identify pastoral concerns and to help evaluate preaching designed to meet those concerns.
