  • This study is based upon the three following assumptions: the gospel calls for and expects Christian transformation; transformation as set forth in the Scriptures is not taking place among Protestant Christians in the United States today; and, the answer for this problem, according to many, is the adoption and use of the spiritual disciplines on a regular basis. This study, then, is an attempt to study and understand the private use of four inward disciplines from the larger list of spiritual exercises. This study focuses on silence and solitude, Bible study, meditation and prayer. It is also an attempt to understand how each discipline can contribute to personal transformation. Lastly, it is an attempt to discover how to develop a practical plan for integrating them into everyday personal practice and into church life.
