- Preaching on the topic of hell is difficult, especially for ministers in mainline congregations. This project supposes that hell is an important topic to address from the pulpit. The project does not address the question of who is going to hell. Rather, it focuses on the question, What is hell? Relevant biblical passages are considered, followed by three basic interpretations of the biblical material: hell as eternal, conscious punishment; hell as ultimate restoration (universal salvation); and hell as ultimate destruction (conditional immortality). The project presents an overview of the history of hell in preaching and a discussion of homiletical method, along with a deductive and inductive sermon on the topic. The project recommends ultimate destruction (conditional immortality) as the best definition of hell, presents evidence that members of a congregation appreciated hearing a sermon on this topic, and also that the congregation preferred the inductive structure over the deductive structure in the example sermons.
