Abstract
  • This project focuses on research into the lives and ministries of four nineteenth century women: Elizabeth Gurney Frye, Quaker evangelist and prison reformer; Harriet Beecher Stowe, American author of thrity novels whose Uncle Tom's Cabin was blamed for starting the Civil War; Angelina Grimke, abolitionist and early advocate of women's rights; and Mary Slessor, the radical Scots missionary to Africa. Using the original sources of their diaries, letters and published works, their own words are transposed from the written form onto the stage as two-act dramatic monologues. Two completed scripts are included in this work; they are the Fry and Stowe plays which have been performed before live audiences whose feedback is included (chapter 7) in the work and whose reactions informed the re-writing of the finished scripts. Those scripts, with historical introductions and study guides, comprise chapters 3 and 5 of the work. Chapters 1,2,4, and 6 are descriptions of the creative process itself, especially the interplay between its personal and communal forms.
