Abstract
  • The author led the Southern Baptist Church of Baltimore through a process of discerning, transitioning and refocusing of its ministry toward effective community transformation in the East Side of Baltimore. The theological underpinnings of Howard Thurman influenced the author's contextual reading and reflective framework. The congregation responded positively to the pastor's visionary initiatives; there has been substantial growth in the membership, discipleship, and the balancing of the congregation's internal and external commitments. Southern Baptist offers itself as a model for other traditional black churches of its denomination struggling to make its ministry and mission for community transformation more effective.
