  • This project is a case study of the relationship between the senior and associate pastor of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The project asks whether the method of shared leadership in which the senior pastor, Dr. Mark Lacey, and the author are currently engaged in is theologically sound. Central to this examination is the notion of 'prevenient trust.' Prevenient trust, like prevenient grace, is that which is offered before any effort is made to merit it, specifically in regard to leadership. Just as God has shown such trust to human leaders throughout scripture, so might those charged with the responsibility of leading Christ's church today extend a similar trust to those associates who work alongside them.
